Middlesex Sheriff’s green custodial program crew completes project for Arlington Housing Authority

Middlesex Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian visited the Arlington Housing Authority’s (AHA) Hauser Building on Thursday, April 17 to inspect work being completed by a Community Work Program (CWP) crew from the Middlesex House of Correction.

The CWP crew working at the Hauser Building was comprised of inmates participating in the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office’s green custodial certification program.  Inmates who participate in the nine week program learn about the newest techniques and tools in the green janitorial industry and graduate with multiple private certifications they can then use to apply for jobs following their release.

Inmates working at the Hauser Building were stripping and cleaning floors on the building’s first floor.  The AHA estimated the project saved them $10,000.

“Our CWP initiative accomplishes multiple goals including helping public entities complete much needed projects and getting inmates into a work-a-day routine prior to their release,” said Sheriff Koutoujian. “And with our janitorial certification program, inmates are also learning a productive skill they can put to use when they return to society.”

All of the inmates who take part in the program are under the constant supervision of trained deputies.
