Pedestrian Killed Trying to Cross Mass Ave.

The 77-year-old woman was reportedly not in a crosswalk. No charges have been filed against the driver.

An Arlington woman was killed while attempting to cross the street Saturday night, police have reported.

Helen Doyle, 77, of Arlington, was hit by a 2009 Honda Civic while trying to cross Massachusetts Avenue around 9:20 Saturday night. Doyle was not in a crosswalk at the time, police said, and no charges have been filed against the driver, but Police Chief Frederick Ryan said the Arlington Police Department and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office continue to investigate.

The victim sustained head trauma and was immediately attended to by first responders. She was taklen by Armstrong Ambulance paramedics to Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, where she later died.

The driver of the Honda Civic that struck the victim, a 76-year-old Brookline woman, remained at the scene and was interviewed by Arlington Police investigators. A preliminary investigation shows that the victim was attempting to cross Massachusetts Avenue approximately 250 feet from the intersection with Park Avenue and was not walking in a crosswalk.

“This is a tragic incident involving the loss of life in our community,” Chief Ryan said. “On behalf of the entire community, I offer my sincere condolences to the victim’s family. My heart goes out to them during this extremely difficult time.”
