Overnight work being performed for safety and to expedite progress.
At its October 13th meeting Arlington’s Select Board voted to approve short-term safety improvements to the intersection of Mass Ave and Appleton Street/Appleton Place in Arlington Heights. Weather permitting, work on Mass. Ave. will begin Sunday, October 24th. Overnight work hours will be 9:00 p.m. - 5:00 a.m. The Town’s contractor, Markings Inc., estimates it will take 3 nights to complete this work.
Road work includes removal of existing paving markings and updating them between #1171 and #1234 Mass. Ave. (Forest Street to just past Lowell St) to accommodate an east bound bike lane and other safety features. Download a map of the project area.
No Parking zones will be posted as needed to provide room for equipment and construction activity. The Police Department will provide Traffic Safety Detail Officers to assist with traffic management, increase work zone safety, and enforce parking restrictions. The work zone will remain accessible for the majority of the time with possible limited detours
During construction, access to driveways, certain road sections and portions of the sidewalk may be closed on a temporary basis. Drivers, pedestrians and residents are asked to follow posted instructions as applicable.
After these short-term safety improvements of the intersection are completed and during months when glare is significant there will be no left turn from Mass Ave westbound to Appleton Street or Appleton Place. Cones will continue to be used to denote this restriction at these times. The Town plans to develop a long-term solution for this intersection, such as a fixed traffic signal, and is pursuing grant opportunities to fund it.
