As Jenna considered ways to satisfy the requirements for her Girl Scout Silver Award, she never dreamed that her small vision of a backyard bash would blossom into a grand and gracious gift for needy children and teachers in Haiti.

Jenna prepared letters for local businesses hopeful they would offer support and donations for her community service project to help children in Haiti. Much to her delight, she received above and beyond what she needed to create a carnival style Backyard Bash right in her own neighborhood.

Jenna logged 78 hours of preparation for the fun afternoon filled with clowns, games, face painting, food, music, popcorn and candy. Tickets were sold for each of the games and activities, and beautiful raffle baskets were bid upon. Friends, neighbors, teachers, family and church members joined Jenna with their immense support.

For Jenna, her commitment to the bash became about much more than the Silver Award. Her backyard bash became a day for kids to help kids across the world.

Initially thinking that her service project would bring in about $500, Jenna and her friends squealed with delight as they counted the proceeds. The bash brought in $2,285. The generous hearts of everyone who came and offered their support humbled Jenna and her family. Additional donations also came in providing Jenna with $2,485 to purchase French children’s books for Haitian children and teachers.

This April, the books will be hand delivered to Haiti by a Mission’s Team of four women, including Jenna’s mom, from their church: Community Coveant Church in Rehoboth. Jenna hopes to visit Haiti one day to see the school where the books have been distributed.
