Students in the Grade 2 class taught by Mary Williams amazed parents and onlookers June 23 with their writing progress during a special “Book Launch” program in their classroom.
Under Williams’ guidance, students have for the past three months composed entries about her orange-and-white feline, DK, who visited the classroom earlier this year. Williams has successfully used cats for many years to help her students develop their learning abilities and received national attention several years ago for her innovative teaching methods.
Williams collected and edited the students’ entries and inserted them into beautiful hard-bound books entitled “The Adventures of DK,” individualized for each student. She hosted the students and their parents May 23, during which students received their personalized copies of the book and read passages aloud to those in attendance.

“These kids worked really hard since February on these books,” Williams said. “I’m so proud of what they’ve done.”
Getting into the spirit of the occasion, several students wore orange clothing and a large assortment of refreshments were consumed at the conclusion of the program, including orange soda, orange juice, whole oranges, carrots, Doritos potato chips, orange cookies and cupcakes, and doughnuts.
