Lady Bears of Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech Beat Seekonk Girls Basketball
Seekonk managed a great turn around from their blow out loss to Taunton on Sunday, but GNB Voc-Tech were ultimately too much for them. They lost 55-41.
Ashley Hurst led the Warriors with 10 points on Tuesday night, but she was faced with a physical mismatch on defense. In contrast to Sunday, the defensive effort was their for Seekonk on Tuesday. GNB Voc-Tech worked for every basket they got on their way to the victory.
"We're probably going to have a size mismatch for the rest of the season," said coach Steven Borger of his team which boasts only one healthy player as tall as 5-foot nine-inches. Hurst was forced to cover the Bears' Stephanie Antoine who stands at six-foot one-inches and plays bigger.
"I thought Ashley did a good job with her," said Borger of the key matchup. The coach added, "When you see a size mismatch like that, you have to pressure the ball." Borger said that while Hurst did well denying Antoine the ball, his guards needed to do better pressing their counterparts.

As the Bears won that matchup, other looks opened up for them. Although Antoine had only 12 points (tied with her teammate Vanessa Conceicao to lead all scorers), her presence opened things up around the top of the key. GNB Voc-Tech players shot from those lanes and found success.
Down the stretch, Seekonk were still very much in the game despite trailing virtually the entire time. They had the ball down by four or less on four different occasions in the second half.

"Until the end, I thought we did a good job closing the gap," said Borger. He told his team after the game, "I was glad to see that when they went [up by] six, eight, ten...it went [back to] eight, six, four." Borger's team certainly did a better job cutting the deficit than they have in recent games.
Seekonk are still looking for their first win on the season. They remain home for a third straight game when they host Apponequet on Thursday night. "I feel like we competed well with this team," said Borger, adding, "We can compete better with Apponequet on Thursday."
