New Bedford Double Homicide Suspect Wanted

Massachusetts police said Carmelo Kercado shot and killed two men in New Bedford October 10. Call 1-800-KAPTURE if you see him.

NEW BEDFORD, MA — A suspect has been identified in Tuesday's double homicide in New Bedford. Carmelo Kercado, 35, of New Bedford, shot two men two death October 10, police said Friday. He was in a vehicle with the victims when he shot them at point-blank range, police said.

Kercado was added to the Massachusetts State Police "most wanted" list. Anyone with information on Kercado's whereabouts is asked to call 1-800-KAPTURE (1-800-527-8873) or 911. (Sign up for free daily newsletters and breaking news alerts from Massachusetts Patch sites.)

"KERCADO is known to carry a firearm and may also have access to rifles, and should be considered armed and dangerous," Massachusetts He has an extensive, violent criminal history that includes prior convictions for weapons and assault offenses. In addition to the current murder charges, he is also wanted on an unrelated warrant for possession of a Class B narcotic. He has ties to New Bedford, Randolph, and Boston."

Kercado is accused of killing Stephen Bodden, 27, and Fabio Tavares, 28, both of New Bedford. Police said the trio were riding in a vehicle when Kercado pulled out a gun and shot them dead, fleeing the scene after the vehicle crashed.
