New Bedford Seafood Wholesaler Indicted
George Estudante, a New Bedford seafood wholesaler who owned Basic Fisheries, was indicted for tax evasion, authorities said.

BOSTON, MA — A former New Bedford seafood wholesaler was recently indicted on tax evasion charges. George Estudante, 57, formerly of Marion, was charged with two counts of failing to file tax returns and one count of filing a false tax return. He operated Basic Fisheries in Marion.

Estudante allegedly failed to file tax returns in 2010 and 2011 then filed a false tax return in 2012, according to Acting U.S. Attorney William Weinreb. In 2010 and 2011, Basic Fisheries received $1.4 million and $1.6 million in payments, Weinreb said. In 2012, Estudante reported $533,078 in gross receipts when bank records showed more than $740,000, Weinreb said.

Estudante was indicted in federal court in Boston. An indictment means a grand jury determined a trial is warranted based on evidence in a case.
