Newman YMCA Helping People Keep Their Resolutions

The Newman YMCA is offering benefits to new members to help them stick with their resolutions.

Now that it’s two weeks after New Year’s, many are likely finding it tougher and tougher to stick to their resolutions to be healthier, to exercise more or to just drop a few pounds.

The is offering a program to help people stay on track with their resolutions and continue to stay motivated and healthy.

This year, when a member joins in January, the YMCA staff will provide a free wellness consultation as well as three free supervised workouts.

The wellness consultants, called Navigators at the YMCA, help members find the programs and activities that not only best suit their needs, but also will keep their interest. The YMCA believed this model is the most effective way for people to not just temporarily drop pounds, but to truly change to a healthier lifestyle.

This model has been verified by Dr. James Prochaska, a Professor of Psychology at URI and founder of Pro-Change Behavior Systems. He collaborated with the Y to develop some of these strategies.

“Y Navigators are trained to guide members wherever they are at in the change process--not ready, getting ready, or ready to make a behavior change. The program is uniquely designed for those ready to make a behavior change as well as those getting ready and not ready,” said Dr. Prochaska in a press release.

More information on the program can be found online or by calling the Newman YMCA at 508-336-7103.
