Patch Picks: Celebrate Memorial Day With Patriotic Desserts

Along with other activities, we will be eating and drinking on Memorial Day. Here are some patriotic offerings and local barbecue that will sure please a crowd.

Patch Picks:  The following recipes are great for all and are easy so you can relax and enjoy your party! There is an edible American flag that everyone will want to salute to, and other fun patriotic fare to help celebrate next Monday’s holiday. If you are a fan of barbecue and want to support local business, there is always great take out in North Seekonk! Some recipes are volunteered to us from local residents.

  • American Flag Cake: Jackie Gallishaw, Seekonk resident and one of my sons’ baseball coaches has this patriotic dessert every year on Memorial Day which also honors one of her son’s birthdays. She uses vanilla cake, vanilla icing, or whipped cream, and decorates the stars with blueberries and the stripes with strawberries.
  • Patriotic Cupcakes: Cupcakes are always great for the younger crowd and all you really need is either some blue food coloring with red sprinkles. Blueberries or raspberries are also an option for on top of the frosted little snacks.
  • Boneyard Barbecue & Saloon: In the North end of Seekonk is a small watering hole that also wrangles up some great boneless barbecue wings. Should you find yourself not in the mood for cooking, this is a great alternative. You can buy a variety of different ‘flavors’ of barbecue and have a platter of wings to go. Contact a few days in advance if you'd like to do this.  508-761-6855
  • Patriotic Drink: Your kids will have fun making this. There are four ingredients and 3 steps to this refreshing concoction. You need ice cubes, Wild berry flavor Gatorade fierce™, cranberry juice, and Diet 7-up™. Fill a clear glass with ice cubes.  Pour in the cranberry juice first then very slowly add the Gatorade™.  Be careful pouring it onto the ice cubes so the 2 drinks don’t mix. Use the same technique to add a layer of Diet 7-Up™.
  • Taco Salad: This is a tasty and very popular side dish at my family’s Memorial Day cookout. Here’s the recipe - a bag of Doritos™, one of each of the following - red tomato, green pepper, head of lettuce, and onion, shredded mild cheddar cheese, Catalina Italian dressing, 1 pound of hamburger and taco seasoning powder. Chop up vegetables, crush your chips.  Then season and brown the meat. Mix everything together and mix it a lot!  Enjoy!
