Time is Right for Family to Take Over Abandoned South Attleboro Gas Station

After nearly a year of being a boarded-up eyesore to residents, the First Stop gas station is getting a makeover.

A family-owned business is opening in South Attleboro in a few weeks, according to the new owners.

The Yousif family, who own the Wrentham Service Center (Wrentham Mobile) on South Street, have been clearing, cleaning and preparing the former First Stop gas station at 584 Washington St. in South Attleboro since Monday, getting it ready for reopening.

The abandoned gas station, which had "Danger" signs posted on the doors and windows by the city of Attleboro, was a good business opportunity for the family, according to George Yousif. So after months of working with the city, the Yousif family closed the deal on the purchase of the gas station and began the cleaning process.

Time is of the essence for the family, because with each day that passes the family loses out on customers at the pump. And these days that is a huge deal with gas prices teetering between $3.50 and $4 in the Bay State.

Yousif and wife Deanna Sarkis, along with Yousif's parents, were busy Wednesday removing old shelves, boxes and products left behind by the former owners.

Working hard is not something the Yousifs shy away from, especially since they have been running a family-owned business since 1991. Still, the family has its work cut out for them. While computer systems, calibrating dispensers and tanks will need to be replaced, "nothing on the outside will be touched," according to Yousif, but overall it will have "a new image."

"While every site is different," he said, "what we offer will be the same."
