Seekonk Turkey Day Tradition Attracts More Than 350 Runners [VIDEO]

The YMCA's fourth annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Run raises money for financial assistance.

The Newman YMCA held its fourth annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Run this morning with more than 350 participants running to raise money for the YMCA’s financial aid program.

This is the fourth year for the run, and for some it has become part of their Thanksgiving Day tradition. YMCA director Luca DelBorgo noted that he saw many people wearing the T-shirts from the previous years’ events.

“People get to burn off calories before they eat them,” said YMCA executive director Jeanine Achin.

The runners’ entry fees of $25 will go entirely to helping fund financial assistance for those who need it to continue with their various YMCA programs. This could range from keeping kids in after-school programs or helping the elderly pay for their activities.

Both DelBorgo and Achin said they were happy with the turnout. Achin added that 350 is a typical number for the event, though last year the number dipped a bit due to the cold.

The overall winners of the 5K and 10K races will receive a pie, an appropriate prize given the holiday. Medals and other awards will be given to the top three finishers in each age group as well.

“It's just a really fun day for everyone. There is a lot of camaraderie here,” said Achin.
