VIDEO: D-R/Seekonk Hockey Loses to Apponequet

Despite Adam Ferreira's second hat trick in three games, the Falcons fell to the Lakers 6-4 in an "away" game on their shared home ice.

The Falcons of the D-R/Seekonk Hockey team gave the Apponequet Lakers a fight on Saturday, but they just could not close the deal. Falcon goaltender Jake Roy, a rock solid foundation for the team all season, played very injured and it showed.

"It's my MCL," said Roy of the leg he was favoring after the game. When Roy left the lockerroom he was literally using his goalie stick as a cane. He admitted he hadn't seen a doctor yet but would "get it checked out soon."

The Falcons' Sam Deblois and Apponequet's Derek Clancy each scored in the first 90 seconds, setting the tone for a fast paced, end-to-end game. Connor Storms and Tyler Clancy netted markers as the period went on, putting the Falcons against a wall.

The white hot Adam Ferreira finally answered with just 17 seconds remaining in the first. Ferreira's effort allowed the Falcons to return to their dressing room with some momentum. "He logs a lot of ice time because he's the spark plug," said D-R/Seekonk coach Ryan Cordeiro of his captain and first line center.

Ferreira and the Falcons stayed hot, keeping the better of possession out of the gate in the second. Roughly six minutes into the second, Ferreira got his second, a powerplay goal from linemates Dylon Swift and Joey Given.

When the Falcons' skating game finally lapsed, Jake Roy was beaten on a partial break away by Cody Gavin with five minutes left in the second. Ferreira obviously did not like the idea of going into the lockerroom behind, because he added his third tally of the night with twelve seconds left in the second, keeping the game at 4-4 during the break.

Unfortunately, Roy was not equal to the task in the third and the Falcon offense was spent. Mark Mello, who already had three assists on the night, beat Roy 90 seconds into the final stanza, the goal that would be the game winner.

The push from the Falcons was impressive as they attempted to equalize one last time. A final push might not have been required if the Falcons had cashed in on more of their six powerplay chances, including two five-on-three oportunity. They had several chances that caught iron or went through the Apponequet crease, but none found their way home. Connors Storms added his second goal, an empty netter in the final minute, to put the game on ice.

"We had a ton of chances. I'm proud of the way they played. We just didn't get the bounces," said Cordeiro of the wild third period that produced no goals for the Falcons.

Roy's injuries are a major factor for the Falcons, who fall to 6-7 on the season, going forward. "Jake is just that important to us," said Cordeiro of his goalie whose future is very much in doubt. The Falcons have eight games remaining, all crammed into two weeks time. This will make any comeback for Roy difficult at best. "I don't know, it doesn't look good," said Cordeiro.

"I wanted to come out and give them the game that they deserve," said Roy of his teammates. "I just couldn't do it, I'm sorry," continued Roy, admitting he may be "out for the season."

With Roy potentially on the shelf, the Falcons will need some breaks to get the remaining four wins they need. "The hockey Gods ain't shining on us. It comes and goes quick," admitted Cordeiro.
