VIDEO: Seekonk 11U Little League Team Wins District Title
The local team went 4-0 in the district tournament, held at the Seekonk complex behind Kevin Hurley Middle School. Their 6-1 win over Somerset on Friday closed out a district win and bought them a trip to the sectionals.

Kevin Dowty, coach of the Seekonk 11U allstar team, said on the night the tournament started that, "I think being home helps. They play 18 games a piece on these fields, it's a five minute commute, the kids are just more comfortable."
It appears the skipper was right, because his team ran the table in the district tournament, winning their second district banner in as many years. The final win came on Friday night over Somerset, a 6-1 victory.
Things started off with Somerset's Austin Cooley and Seekonk's James Jackson dealing. Two and a half innings had gone by with no score in under a half hour. In the bottom of the third, Seekonk drew first blood.

Jackson and Shane Smith both scored on errant throws by Somerset's defense, and Seekonk was staked to a 2-0 lead. As it would turn out, this was all they needed.
In the top of the fourth, Cooley answered with Somerset's only run of the game. Shane Smith relieved Jackson on the mound, and would finish the game for Seekonk.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, with the score still 2-1, Cooley began to unravel. When Seekonk racked up four hits in five batters, he was lifted, but the damage had been done. Seekonk's defense, which has been a strong point all tournament, shut the door in the sixth.
"It was Just like the rest of our games. Excellent defense, excellent pitching by James Jackson and Shane Smith, and we made the plays we needed to make," said Dowty after the game.
The coach and his team took off for some much deserved ice cream after the game, but their season is far from over. They will play in the Rehoboth Summer Slam tournament at the Martin Street fields all weekend, but those tilts are a mere tuneup. Sectional play begins on Thursday night, when Seekonk will host the first game at 5:45 p.m.
