VIDEO: Seekonk 12U All-Stars Begin Tournament with Lopsided Win

Seekonk's 12U team traveled to Somerset for their first game in the district six tournament, where they put up 12 runs in only four innings.

Seekonk's 12U team caused the mercy rule to be enforced in Thursday night's all-star tilt in Somerset. In Little League baseball, where a standard game is six innings long, a game can end after a team has had four chances to bat and trails by 10 runs.

Such was the case at the end of Seekonk's 12-1 drubbing of Somerset. "It was a good win, good to have," said Seekonk manager Dave Gallup. Nathan Ferrick started on the hill for Seekonk, striking out four batters over only two and a third innings pitched.

Gallup, seeing the lopsided score, pulled Ferrick before he could throw his 35th pitch, providing all of Seekonk's players with pitching eligibility for Saturday's game.

Jack Foisy filled in for Ferrick, striking out two more batters and shutting the door. But Foisy's offensive contribution may have been more impressive, at least for spectators.

In the top of the fourth inning, Foisy's only chance at the plate, he deposited a pitch in a crowd of spectators some 240 feet away in right-centerfield. Homeruns are rare enough in Little League baseball, so it was quite the surprise to spectators when Eddy Jackson dug in after Foisy and hit a long fly to almost the same spot.

This particular display was part of an impressive and diverse offensive effort. Seekonk scored a run for every out recorded against them in the game, and racked up 14 hits in the abbreviated engagement. The only starter without a hit was Ferrick, who was 0-1 but contributed substantially with his pitching.

"That's always been our strong point is hitting. We have at least six good pitchers on this team, but our offense is our strong point," said Gallup after his team put on a hitting clinic.

Seekonk remains in the winners bracket in the district tournament, a key advantage, giving the team fewer games to play so their pitching will stay fresh. They will host Fairhaven at the fields behind Kevin Hurley Middle School on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

"Keep coming out to the games, cheer on Seekonk," Gallup urged fans after the game. It's possible that this team has put on as good of an offensive display as they can, but they did leave six men on base over four innings. Fans attending Saturday may get to see more fireworks.
