VIDEO: Seekonk 12U Little League Beats Somerset Team

Seekonk players traveled to Somerset for the second time in this district tournament, and came out with a decisive victory for the second time. The 12U team is now 3-1 in the district tournament, after knocking out Somerset with another mercy rule victory

Seekonk's 12U team knocked Somerset out of the district tournament on Saturday morning. Because of last night's heavy rain, Seekonk had to travel to Somerset . For a second time they invaded, putting up ten runs in only five innings.

"This was more of what I was used to; hitting, running, making plays," said manager Dave Gallup, whose team was coming off a disappointing loss to Fall River American. They were able to bounce back and once again apply the mercy rule to Somerset.

The action started when Eddy Jackson once again doubled from the leadoff spot. Moments later, Brendan Cavaco hit a bomb to left field that cleared the fence and the basketball court beyond it.

It turned out this was all Seekonk would need, because Jack Foisy and Nathan Ferrick were very stingy over the five innings they split. Foisy, who has been flawless, started the game and struck out six batters over four scoreless innings. Ferrick, bouncing back from a rough outing in Fall River on Thursday, threw a scoreless fifth inning.

Much of the rest of Seekonk's offense was more opportunistic than the big hits of Cavaco and Jackson. Five runs were scored when Somerset pitches went to the backstop and Seekonk runners stole home. But runs are runs, and Seekonk got enough of them to end the game an inning early.

"Intensity, that was our big conversation this morning. Got to stay intense, every play," said Gallup, who got a perfect present with the win on Saturday, his birthday. His baserunners maintained their intensity late into the game, with Justin Silva stealing home on a passed ball to end the contest.

Seekonk does know that they will play Monday, but the venue and opponent are as yet undetermined. Taunton East National, a team Seekonk has not yet faced, plays for the right to play Seekonk on Monday.

If Seekonk can continue their run, it will be an uphill climb. They would have to win four games in the coming week, with no room for a loss. If they are to win the district, they would play Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
