VIDEO: Seekonk 12U Little League Shut Out of District Tournament

Fairhaven beat Seekonk 5-3, ending the team's bid for another district title. Seekonk rallied in the sixth, but came up short. The team will still play in two other tournaments later in the summer, so fans can catch them in Plymouth or Rehoboth.

Seekonk had a rough first inning when they visited Fairhaven little league on Monday, and they never recovered. Nathan Ferrick was touched up for five runs in total but four came in the initial frame.

The Seekonk lineup was shut down for much of the game. "Their pithcer was throwing a lot of curveballs and a lot of changeups. It caught the boys a little off guard," said manager Dave Gallup of his team's lack of offense. He added, "You know, hitting is contagious," citing the slow start as a major problem for his lineup.

When Seekonk's offense finally came alive, it was too little and too late. Eddy Jackson ripped a double to right to kick off the sixth inning. Next up was Brendan Smith, who moved Jackson over with a sacrifice fly.

Smith's sacrifice turned out to be unnecessary, because Brendan Cavaco raked the first pitch he saw deep and out in left field. "Let's go!" Cavaco screamed at his teammates as he crossed the plate, adding, "We're still in this."

The team and there fans started to believe, and they got more hope when Noah Agostini knocked a groundball through the legs of the second baseman and into right field.

But Matt Gallup grounded into a fielder's choice, pushing Seekonk to the brink. Matt Heaney hit a fly ball to deep left, but it came up short, and so did Seekonk.

"After winning the district last year, we wanted to repeat, so yeah, we're disappointed," said Gallup after the game. The coach also wanted to remind fans that his team may be out of the district tournament, but they are not done playing together.

This same group of Seekonk 12U players will be playing in a tournament in Plymouth at the end of July, but much closer to home, they will begin the Rehoboth Summer Slam tournament on Friday. Games will be played at the Martin street fields in Rehoboth. "As long as the boys want to keep playing," said Gallup of when the season would end.
