Warrior Volleyball is Getting Ready for a New Season [VIDEO]

The volleyball team is starting to take shape for the new season, as they look for a playoff spot.

Last November, when wrapped up its volleyball season, coach Earl Berwick had played a lot of younger players more than he would have liked. "At one point tonight, we had three sophomores and a freshman on the floor for a varsity game," said Berwick on senior night last season.

He explained at the time that this kind of thing was less than ideal for the 2010 season, but it might be good news for 2011. On Thursday, some of those youngsters with varsity experience along with other players started preparing for the new season.

"We should have a pretty solid season," said Berwick at Friday's session. "All of our returners had varsity experience last year." Returners like Kelsey Harrington, who brings a strong serve to the table, and big hitters like Kasey Webb.

"Even just starting [practice] there is a huge difference in the team's dynamic," says Harrington, a Senior and tri-captain of the team. "We tried throughout the summer to bond more with the freshmen...and a lot of girls have done arm strengthening throughout the summer in preparation for the season."

"We need to work on keeping our spirits up at all times," said senior tri-captain Erin Laprade. She says the team is technically and tactically sound, but susceptable to "letting down very easily."

With only two days of practice in the books, the complete shape of the varsity team is still to be determined. Two things were clear at Friday's practice, morale and participation are both up from last season. Said Harrington, "The want of a playoff spot has never been stronger."
