• An artillery shell is detonated, a hippo gets lucky, and a wild chase ends in a cornfield (bostonglobe.com) — Ayer police and firefighters recently teamed up for an unusual rescue, using a hooked pole from a fire truck and a police cruiser to safely drag a cat carrier away from an underground wasp nest without anyone getting stung. The roundup also recounts a safely detonated artillery shell in Maynard, a car crashing into a mini-golf hippo statue on the Cape, and a wild Route 2 police chase that ended in a cornfield.
