Do You Do Windows? Literary Translation and Your Day Job

The Scribbler Suite invites you to: "Do You Do Windows? Literary Translation and Your Day Job" --

a free literary translation seminar at Emerson College on March, 26 2012, at 8pm in the Piano Row Multipurpose room. Poet, translator, and publisher, Jim Kates, will lead a discussion on literary translation from the writer, translator and publishers perspective. Jim is co-director of Brookline's Zephyr Press, a nonprofit press that focuses on contemporary works in translation from Russia, Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Jim is translator of "The Score of the Game" by Tatiana Shcherbina, "Say Thank You" by Mikhail Aizenberg and "When a Poet Sees a Chestnut Tree" by Jean-Pierre Rosnay. He is the translation editor of the "Contemporary Russian Poetry" anthology, and the editor of "In the Grip of Strange Thoughts: Russian Poetry in a New Era." Jim co-translated three books of Latin American poetry, and has a book of his own poems, "Mappemonde" (Oyster River Press). Jim will explain how he became involved in literary translation, the unique challenges and opportunities that come with running a translation press, including marketing and planning book tours for authors across the globe, how translation books are selected for publication, and how one can become involved in literary translation, as a writer, translator, or publisher. He will also take questions on the general publishing industry.
