Police: Officers Nab Newbury Street Burglar

Alleged thief may be connected to numerous break-ins on the street.

Police arrested a man who was caught in the act while trying to burglarize a store.

Officers believe Antonia Roman, 42 is connected to numerous high-end break-ins on Newbury Street, including a July 7 incident at 179 Newbury that police have surveillance of (see photos).

Roman was arrested at 1:47 a.m. and charged with attempted breaking and entering and possession of burglarious tools. Before being read his Miranda rights, Roman admitted he was about to get his tools in order to break a shop window and steal shoes and clothes, police said.

He will likely face further charges in the near future for other incidents.

Officers on patrol first noticed a man, dressed all in black,  jump from an air conditioning unit in the rear alley of 251 Newbury Street (BLVD Boston.)

Later identified as Roman, when questioned he said he was "simply going to the bathroom," police said. Then, officers noticed a backpack on the air conditioning unit where he had jumped from.

Roman "became visibly nervous, breathing heavy and sweating" during the conversation. Officers then inspected the bag and noticed that it contained:

  • a large pry bar/hammer tool
  • latex gloves
  • leather gloves
  • a black mask
  • a head lamp
  • a Leatherman tool.

"Based on the time of night, past similar incidents in the area, the location and the items recovered from his bag, officers opted to detain the suspect for further investigation," police said. 

Roman is believed to be responsible for numerous breaks in the area over the past several months. The investigation continues at this time.
