9/11 Patriots Day Service In Barnstable
A day of remembrance is scheduled in Barnstable Village, and the COMM Fire Department will host a Wednesday morning ceremony.
BARNSTABLE, MA — Sometimes called Patriots Day, Sept. 11 has become a national day of remembrance honoring the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In Barnstable, a remembrance service is again organized by the Barnstable Fire Department and St. Mary's Episcopal Church.
A ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the Barnstable Fire Department, 3249 Main St., featuring Massachusetts Rep. Kip Diggs as a guest speaker. At 10:30 a.m., a procession will walk from the fire house up Main Street to St. Mary's Episcopal Church.
A service at the church begins at 10:45 a.m. featuring music and readings. State Rep. Steve Xiarhos will be the keynote speaker.

After the service, a reception is scheduled at St. Mary's Old English Gardens.
Nearby, the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department will hold a remembrance ceremony at 9:45 a.m. The ceremony will be held at Station 1, 1875 Falmouth Rd., in Centerville.

Americans felt a collective trauma as first one and then another plane flew into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. As the truth dawned on people watching from their TVs that America was under attack, another plane took aim at the Pentagon. A fourth was brought down in a field in Pennsylvania in a final act of heroism by passengers who realized their flight had been hijacked.
At least 2,973 people lost their lives in the attacks. The somber anniversary is marked across the country with memorial services, moments of silence and community events.
