BARNSTABLE, MA — The town of Barnstable has almost finished work on its new fire department headquarters, and the results are beginning to show.

The project was proposed three years ago and broke ground last August. The new station, on a town-owned lot at 1841 Phinneys Lane, replaces the original home of the Barnstable Fire Department, which was founded in 1935.

Costs for the new building should run around $35 million, which has been previously budgeted by the town.

Now the work is nearing completion. The “topping off” ceremony – a traditional occasion when the final, tallest beam is hoisted to the top of a structure, with a commemorative flag and evergreen tree – took place on April 23.

The town calls the new station a “modern, efficient facility designed to serve the Barnstable Fire District for generations to come.”

Over the next several weeks, the fire department said, construction crews will pour concrete on the first and second floors and begin mechanical work throughout the building.

“This project is an important investment in the safety of our firefighters and the community we serve,” the department said in its statement.
