BARNSTABLE, MA — The town of Barnstable has almost finished work on its new fire department headquarters, and the results are beginning to show.
The project was proposed three years ago and broke ground last August. The new station, on a town-owned lot at 1841 Phinneys Lane, replaces the original home of the Barnstable Fire Department, which was founded in 1935.
Costs for the new building should run around $35 million, which has been previously budgeted by the town.
Now the work is nearing completion. The “topping off” ceremony – a traditional occasion when the final, tallest beam is hoisted to the top of a structure, with a commemorative flag and evergreen tree – took place on April 23.
The town calls the new station a “modern, efficient facility designed to serve the Barnstable Fire District for generations to come.”
Over the next several weeks, the fire department said in a social media post Friday, retaining walls will be completed and work will start on exterior walls.
“As these elements begin to take shape, the station will quickly begin to look more and more like the finished facility our district has envisioned,” the department said.
