The police officer struck by an intoxicated driver while directing pedestrian traffic faces a "long recovery" from his "serious injuries," the department said.
"Officer Peter Ginnetty, a 19-year veteran, sustained several serious injuries, including multiple broken bones and a significant injury to his right leg," the department said in a social media post. "Officer Ginnetty remains positive and will face a long recovery ahead."
Ginnetty was "standing in a marked crosswalk assisting with pedestrian traffic near the conclusion of a concert at the Cape Cod Melody Tent" and was "wearing a bright-colored, reflective jacket and holding a flashlight while positioned in an illuminated crosswalk equipped with flashing lights" when he was struck the night of Sept. 13, the Barnstable Police Department said in a previous post.
"Barnstable Police Officers and Cape Cod Melody Tent staff immediately began rendering aid to the injured officer," the post said. "Members of the Hyannis Fire Department subsequently arrived and transported the officer to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment."
The driver, 43-year-old Robert Brando-Hunt, was arrested on charges of operating under the influence of liquor, operating under the influence of liquor with serious injury and negligence, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, according to the post.
"We ask that everyone continues to keep Officer Ginnetty and his family in your thoughts during this difficult time," the department posted to social media.
"The support shown by the community has been heartfelt and is deeply appreciated," the post said. "Our priority remains supporting Officer Ginnetty and his family throughout the recovery process."
