BARNSTABLE, MA — The town of Barnstable is warning residents of a prescribed burn set for Oct. 7.
MassWildlife is conducting the burn at the Hyannis Ponds and is warning residents not to be alarmed by any smoke they may see.
Officials are also asking residents to pardon any inconvenience the burn may cause.
Prescribed fires help improve wildlife habitats and reduce the risk of wildfires.
They also give firefighters a chance to gain field experience and observe how fire behaves under different conditions.
If local weather conditions change, the burn may be canceled. However, Wednesday's forecast calls for sunny conditions.
More information about prescribed burns can be found online.
