Barnstable Food Pantries Receive Boost From New Grant

A grant helps Barnstable food pantries fight hunger.

BARNSTABLE, MA —A major funding boost is on the way to help Barnstable food pantries fight hunger and put more food on the tables of residents in need.

On Monday, Oct. 26, Barnstable County officials announced in a press release that the county had received a $248,084 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

The funding will help Cape Cod community partners strengthen connections with local food pantries, improve food distribution and ensure more donated food reaches those who need it most.

Cape Cod Cooperative Extension will lead the project, which includes expanding refrigerated transportation, adding freezer and storage space, and providing new tools to better coordinate food donations.

Barnstable County Commissioners Chair Mark Forest announced the grant at the Cape Cod Hunger Summit, where organizations from across the region gathered to discuss ways to improve food access.

With the new funding, the county hopes to reduce food waste, strengthen local food assistance efforts and help more families put meals on the table.
