BARNSTABLE, MA — What could have been a devastating animal story was at least partially salvaged on Cape Cod recently.

A Barnstable police sergeant was at his detail post early Saturday morning when he saw an opossum that had been struck by a car overnight.

The sergeant remembered that opossums are marsupials and could be carrying babies then acted swiftly and checked the mother for babies. Sure enough, the sergeant was able to rescue seven baby opossums.

The animals were returned to the station where they were wrapped in a blanket, eventually being taken to the Cape Wildlife Center. There, they will be rehabilitated and, hopefully, released back into the wild.
