Barnstable Coronavirus Update: Cases Rise To 53

BARNSTABLE, MA — There are 53 positive cases of the new coronavirus in the town of Barnstable as of Monday morning, according to the latest numbers from local health officials.

Board of Health Director Thomas McKean said nurses with the Public Health Division have checked in with infected residents to ensure they remain in isolation. They have also reached out to those who have been in contact with these residents to make sure they self-quarantine.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported that as of Sunday afternoon, 12,500 Massachusetts residents tested positive for COVID-19. This includes 347 residents of Barnstable County.

All residents are urged to social distance by maintaining a minimum of 6 feet from others while out in public including while shopping at grocery stores wherever possible, to limit exposure to others.

Public Health Division staff contacted managers of supermarkets and other businesses in Barnstableto give guidance and assistance with social distancing procedures. Signage, barriers, markings, and Plexiglas shields have been installed.

Health officials also asked managers of supermarkets to have their employees remind customers to adhere to signage and markings in order to maintain social distancing wherever possible.
Residents should also take the following precautions:

• Frequent hand-washing, for 20 seconds with soap.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
• Cough hygiene – into a tissue when possible (throw it away immediately) or into your arm.
• Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose with unwashed hands.
• Avoid contact with those who are ill.
• Stay home yourself from work or school when ill.
