Cape Cod Healthcare Looks To Expand Hyannis Campus
The new four-story facility would include improvements to the oncology department, and also allow flexibility for further expansion.
HYANNIS, MA — Cape Cod Healthcare Inc. has submitted a $137 million proposal to build a new facility at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.
Company officials lay out their rationale and proposed changes in a determination of need proposal, filed with the Department of Public Health.
According to the proposal, the hospital would build a new four-story facility at the same hospital campus at 27 Park St. It would include a relocated and expanded medical oncology department, relocated radiation oncology department, relocated medical/surgical unit consisting of 32 beds and a shell space for future projects.

The hospital's obstetrics and gynecology department will be relocated, however, to accommodate for the new projects.
Cape Cod Healthcare writes that they currently employee more than 450 physicians, 5,300 other employees and 790 volunteers. Their footprint includes two acute care hospitals, homecare and hospice services, a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility, an assisted living facility, an ambulatory surgery center, and numerous primary and specialty care physician practices.

One of the main draws of the proposal is it would centralize cardiac and cancer services, something the company says is needed.
"Due to the aged infrastructure of the Hospital’s current campus, further renovations to bring the Hospital’s oncology services and cardiac medical-surgical units are not feasible given the limited footprint of the building. In addition to prohibitive costs, the necessary renovations to bring the space into compliance would result in fewer beds and would not include space to support clinical team collaboration, to accommodate new technologies, or to provide amenities to families," the proposal said.
