Cape Cod Healthcare In Need Of Blood Donations

Cape Cod Healthcare scheduled 15 blood drives in August to try to increase a dwindling blood supply.

BARNSTABLE, MA — Over the past few months, blood center inventories have fallen to their lowest levels since before the coronavirus pandemic. Cape Cod Healthcare officials said nationwide, blood centers have experienced a significant drop in donations which is limiting the ability for the overall blood supply to be adequately replenished.

Officials said Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital remain in urgent need of blood donations, so several blood drives will be held across Cape Cod in August to benefit Cape Cod Healthcare.

The hospitals must have at least one week’s worth of blood on hand at all times. Since each unit collected or purchased only lasts 42 days, it is a constant challenge to maintain sufficient supply, officials said.
