Cape Cod National Seashore Receives Over $8 Million For Projects

The funds will be used to remove "excess structures" and "restore natural landscapes" in the park. Here's what it entails.

A total of 44 non-historic structures are set to be demolished, many of which were transferred to the National Park Service when the North Truro Air Force Station was decommissioned in the 1990s.

WELLFLEET, MA — Projects intending to restore more "natural landscapes" at the Cape Cod National Seashore just got a boost in funding thanks to the Great American Outdoors Act.

Seashore officials announced on Wednesday that $8.338 million in GAOA funds were awarded to the park to remove and demolish what officials are calling "derelict structures."

Site preparation work for the project will begin in early 2023, and the majority of the hazardous building material remediation, construction waste recycling and demolition will be completed between spring 2023 and spring 2024, officials said.

“The funding we have received from the Great American Outdoors Act will allow us to proactively manage excess structures that would otherwise be costly to maintain and present persistent challenges,” said Reynolds.

Park officials say these buildings pose a threat to public safety for a number of reasons, including the presence hazard building materials.
