Cape Cod Sex Offender Shot At Officer: Police

YARMOUTH, MA — A sex offender shot a flare gun at a police officer during a confrontation in Yarmouth this week, authorities said. Kevin Cahoon, 53, was arrested and charged with a host of crimes. Police had been looking for him in connection with the rape of a disabled person.

The incident happened Thursday morning on Long Pond Drive when a Yarmouth police officer saw Cahoon riding a bicycle behind a building, authorities said.

"Cahoon violently resisted arrest and during the attack ... shot off a flare gun while on the ground actively resisting," Yarmouth police said in a statement.

By chance, two off-duty police officers were in the area at the time and aided in the arrest. Police said they found another flare gun and a knife on Cahoon. Police earlier in the day issued a public bulletin saying Cahoon "will try to obtain a firearm and shoot (police officers) when confronted as he does not want to go back to prison."

Cahoon and a police officer were hospitalized for minor injuries. Cahoon was charged with assaulting a police officer, assault with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest. He also had warrants for rape (subsequent offense), indecent assault, breaking and entering at night, larceny from a building and larceny. He is a Level 3 sex offender, a designation for those at the "highest risk" of reoffending, according to state officials.
