Cape & Islands Get $432K In Grants For Food Security

Compared to 2019, Cape and Island families are experiencing a 70 percent spike in food insecurity in 2020.

BARNSTABLE, MA — Gov. Charlie Baker announced $5.9 million in grants will be awarded to communities across Massachusetts to address food insecurity brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, and more than $432,000 of that will go Cape Cod and the Islands.

Compared to 2019, Cape and Island families are experiencing a 70 percent spike in food insecurity in 2020, Sen. Julian (D-Truro) said.

"Our aquaculturists, fishermen, farmers, and food pantry workers have banded together to meet this harrowing moment," Cyr said in a statement. "I'm grateful for the support they are receiving from the Commonwealth to continue ensuring that every family on Cape Cod and the Islands knows where their next meal comes from."

The grant recipients on Cape Cod and the Islands included the Wellfeet Shellfish Company in Eastham and the Island Food Pantry in Tisbury.

The Wellfleet Shellfish Company was awarded $390,062 for upgrades to expand its operation from a seafood distributor to a seafood production facility. In Tisbury, the Island Food Pantry is expected to receive $42,000 to buy a refrigerated van for food delivery on Martha's Vineyard.
