Centerville Playground Construction Project Gets Tentative Timeline

Officials are "hopeful" construction can begin in the fall of 2024. Here's when they believe it could be completed.

HYANNIS, MA — After originally sharing that a construction project at the Centerville Playground would begin this spring, town officials pivoted, stating now that it will begin a bit later.

In a notice to residents that the playground would be closed due to hazardous conditions, officials also shared that the town received Community Preservation Commission (CPC) funding for a construction project at the playground.

Originally, town officials said they hoped that the construction project would begin this spring. Now, they've shared that officials are "hopeful" that construction can start in the fall of 2024 with an anticipated completion date in the spring or early summer of 2025.

"There are numerous components to the overall site and the town seeks to complete all the extensive work simultaneously as to limit the disruption," officials said.

No date has yet been announced for when the playground would reopen after officials announced that "hazardous conditions" were observed at the playground, prompting the decision to close the site "until further notice."

"The Town continues to pursue efforts to recondition the site," officials said. "Over the last two years, the Department of Public Works, Community Services Department, and the Centerville Playground Committee, have been advancing designs to renovate the playground."

In August 2023, the playground was closed for the removal of a large wooden play structure after officials said elements of its structure had failed.

Public information meetings have been held about the playground, and officials have also accepted public comment on the ongoing design process. Those were reviewed publicly on Nov. 21, 2023.
