Cocaine Trafficking Charges For New Bedford Man On Cape Cod

A man faces drug trafficking charges after police recovered 580 grams of cocaine on Thursday.

BARNSTABLE, MA — A New Bedford man is charged with traveling to Cape Cod to traffic cocaine, Barnstable police officials said.

This is part of a partnership between Barnstable and the Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit and Detective Unit, Drug Enforcement Administration Cape Cod Task Force and Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office. The group partnered to "combat drug trafficking and violent crimes in the Cape Cod community," officials said.

On Thursday at approximately 1:45 p.m., Nilton Maia, 36 of New Bedford, was taken into custody for trafficking cocaine.

"Maia had traveled to Cape Cod for the sole purpose of selling illicit narcotics," officials said.

In his possession were 580 grams of cocaine packaged for wholesale distribution, officials said.

Maia was held at the Barnstable Police Department on $50,000 cash bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Barnstable District Court on Friday.
