Coronavirus: 1 Man Dead On Cape Cod

Officials with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed the first death from the new coronavirus on Cape Cod.

BARNSTABLE, MA — A Barnstable county man has died after contracting the new coronavirus, according to state health officials.

Officials with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed the first death from COVID-19 on Cape Cod Wednesday afternoon. The man was in his 80s, was hospitalized and had pre-existing conditions that put him further at risk.

Officials have not released the man's identity or what town in Barnstable County he was from. He was one of four new deaths state officials reported Thursday; two others were in Worcester County and another was in Norfolk County.

Massachusetts also saw nearly 700 new confirmed cases of Coronavirus, bringing the total cases up to 1,838. This represents a 58 percent increase from Tuesday's total of 1,159 cases.
