Dolphins Rescued From Shallow Cape Cod Waters This Week

Nine dolphins were first spotted in Wellfleet Harbor this week, with eight needing help getting to deeper seas. But that was just the start.

CAPE COD, MA — It's been a busy week for the International Fund for Animal Welfare Cape Cod rescue team.

Over two days, the group has made at least 10 rescue efforts for a group of nine dolphins swimming in shallow waters across Cape Cod.

The first of those came on Monday, when nine Atlantic white-sided dolphins were swimming in shallow waters in Wellfleet Harbor. One of the dolphins in the group swam away when IFAW officials arrived, but the other eight needed help getting to deeper waters.

One dolphin returned to shore the next day, however, again requiring assistance.

"The team used kayaks to herd the animal into an area we could best access, and this dolphin too was transported to deeper, safer waters," officials said.

They continued:

"Immediately following, another dolphin was spotted in Barnstable Harbor (no small distance away!), and the kayaks came in handy again. But that’s not all! The timing of yet another dolphin in Wellfleet—possibly the one that swam away on Monday—meant that the two rescue teams came together, and the two remaining dolphins rode together in our custom-built mobile dolphin rescue vehicle to Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown."

In total, three dolphins were given temporary satellite tags and none seemed to have any injury or illness.
