The world's climate is changing, and the Arctic Ocean and the surrounding area are exerting considerable force on that change. This ocean is home to sea ice, glaciers, polar bears—and very few people. It is known as the world's "air conditioner," and though it remains a frontier, it is recognized as the climate equivalent of the "canary in the coal mine." George B. Newton, former chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission, will describe how the changing conditions in the Arctic foretell the changes the temperate world will experience.
