The Computer Can Be Your Ally!

The Marstons Mills Library is offering four weeks of "Technology Learning Opportunities" for adults in January 2012, preceded by basic skills classes in December.

Week one: 1/3 and 1/5 Internet: Students will learn: browsing the Web, adding Web sites to the Favorites list, Internet maintenance, using search engines, and downloading

Week two: 1/10 and 1/12 Email: Students will sign up for a free e-mail address with Yahoo.com. They will learn how to send and receive e-mails, and also learn about attachments and customizing features.  People who already have an e-mail account should bring their user ID’s and passwords with them.
Week three: 1/17 and 1/19 Word: This class is an introduction to this popular word processing program. Students will learn how to make more interesting documents and save them as files.
Week four: 1/24 and 1/26 Excel: This computer program is the equivalent of a paper ledger sheet. It consists of a grid made from columns and rows. This software is excellent for organizing data, creating mailing lists, and similar tasks.

Each class meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00-10:00am. Classes will be taught by Paul Robock, who also teaches at the Barnstable Senior Center.  Registration is limited.  Adults can sign up for one week (2 meetings) or four weeks (8 meetings).  Preference will be given to adults who sign up for all eight meetings. Classes are FREE thanks to a grant from the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Adults who have limited computer and technical experience must sign up for an introductory prerequisite class "Introduction to Computers, Keyboarding, and the Mouse" in December.  These classes will be taught by Sue Martin or Renee Voorhees and will cover the basics of the computer, hardware, software, keyboard, cursor, and mouse use.  This one-hour introductory class will meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:00-10:00am on the following dates: Dec. 6 and 7, Dec. 13 and 14, and Dec. 20 and 21.
