Former Cape Church Could Boost Hyannis Housing

The vacant building would be repurposed as an apartment complex, which has recently received a go-ahead.

HYANNIS, MA — Instead of a house of worship, a 76-year-old building in Hyannis may soon provide housing.

A former Christian Science church, now vacant, would be razed under a proposal to create a 40-unit apartment complex, the Boston Business Journal reported Monday.

The Barnstable Historical Commission in January OK’d demolition of the building at 94 Stevens St., but required that the arched entryway windows be saved for future use.

Plans call for a complex of four buildings, each standing three stories and with between eight and 12 apartments. The developer, Hyannis-based Starbuck Corp., purchased the property in 2023 for $1 million.

The apartment project has already received $1.8 million through a state tax-credit grant.
