Harris' Pinch Hit Wins Game for Red Raiders

Barnstable comes out on top.

Sometimes it pays off to try something new in order to win.

In just his second varsity at-bat, sophomore shortstop Chris Harris (1-1, RBI) delivered and delivered big ripping a 1-2 fastball up the middle to drive in Tyler Adams yesterday versus Dartmouth for a 6-5, extra-innings victory for Barnstable High School.

The Red Raiders received a solid start from junior righty Willie Nastasi who went six innings and left the game with a 5-3 lead, but the Dartmouth bats came alive in the top of the seventh just around the same time the Barnstable gloves got cold.

The visiting Indians plated three runs in the seventh frame to make it a 5-5 tie off of lefty reliever Derek Kornhiser.

Junior righty Keegan Dellacona (2-3) came on in relief in the top of the 8th, though, and struck out the side, 1-2-3, giving the Red & White the momentum it needed to take home this important league victory. The Red Raiders now stand at 10-5 and 4-1 in the Old Colony League heading into Friday's tilt on the road at Taunton. The effort gave Dellacona his second win of the season.

Adams led off the bottom of the eighth inning and launched a one-hop double off the left field fence, then came rambling home when Harris took a two-strike fastball up the middle for the 6-5 victory.

Nastasi went six innings, struck out six, walked two and scattered three hits but got the no-decision for his effort.

Barnstable got on the board early in the bottom of the first inning when Luke Besse (1-3)  led off with a walk, stole second base, moved to third on a Mark Brodd (2-4, RBI) ground out then came home to make it 1-0 on an Adams' sacrifice fly. Will Toffey (2-3, 2 RBI) singled and came home to make it 2-0 on a Dylan Morris (1-3, RBI) basehit.

Dartmouth came back in the top of the second with a single and two walks to make it 2-1 and there the score stayed until the bottom of the fifth when the Red Raiders caught fire for three runs on hits by D.J. Crook (1-3), Brodd, Adams and Toffey.
