Hyannis Ferry Crash: Multiple Injuries

A Hyannis high-speed ferry with 57 aboard crashed into a jetty in Hyannis Harbor Friday night. Multiple injuries were reported.

BARNSTABLE, MA — A high-speed ferry with 57 people aboard crashed into a jetty in Hyannis Harbor and grounded Friday night, resulting in multiple injuries. Some of the injuries were reported to be serious. The Coast Guard said two people were airlifted off the ferry. Several boats were dispatched to rescue the rest of those aboard.

"Rescue crews are scheduled to work into the night to oversee the safe transfer of all passengers and ferry crew," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The crash happened at about 10 p.m. during a stretch of rainy weather and rough seas. The ferry, named Iyanough, had a crew of nine and 48 passengers aboard at the time of the crash.

A Coast Guard helicopter airlifted 15 passengers from the ship.

Coast Guard Commander Jeannot Smith rough seas, strong winds and slippery rocks impeded the rescue effort.

The 154-foot Iyanough is operated by The Steamship Authority and serves the 26-mile route between Hyannis and Nantucket. Its travel speed is about 35 knots or roughly 40 mph and it completes the trip in about an hour.
