Mecenas Drops Out of State Rep. Race After Write-In Defeat

Despite the outcome, Mecenas was guaranteed a spot on the November ballot because he also filed signatures to run as an independent.

BARNSTABLE, MA — Michael Mecenas has dropped out of the state representative race for the 2nd Barnstable District.

Mecenas, 43, of Hyannis, was defeated by Kipp Diggs in a write-in content on the Democratic ballot in Tuesday's primary election. Despite the outcome, Mecenas was guaranteed a spot on the November ballot because he also filed signatures to run as an independent.

After the defeat, Mecenas told the Cape Cod Times he was still going to run, but on Thursday, he announced he would drop out. Mecenas and Diggs were competing to face incumbent state Rep. William Crocker (R-Centerville), in November's election.

"After further consideration, and speaking with my family, I acknowledge that, for now, my call to serve starts at home and that there are other ways to make a difference and lift up voices that have called on me to serve,” Mecenas said told the Cape Cod Times.
