Meeting Scheduled For Next Steps In 30-Year Barnstable Sewer Project

Town officials will host a public information session as phase one of the 30-year sewer project continues.

BARNSTABLE, MA — The Town of Barnstable is readying to begin phase one of a 30-year sewer expansion project designed to protect the Town’s coastal waters, freshwater ponds and public drinking water resources. This sewer expansion involves multiple construction projects in different areas of town, and, of course, will cause traffic delays and impact businesses in the process.

Call it the cost of doing business, but town officials are trying to mitigate the headache by providing residents as much information as possible. To do so, officials scheduled a public information meeting on Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Barnstable Performing Arts Center at Barnstable High School, 744 West Main St., Hyannis.

"The Barnstable Department of Public Works is working to ensure that residents, businesses and visitors understand the critical need for sewer expansion, and to manage associated construction activity and traffic delays as cost effectively and efficiently as possible," officials said, in a statement.

Construction of the first phase one project, the Strawberry Hill Road Sewer Expansion Project, began in September 2021. The Strawberry Hill Road project will provide sewer services to approximately 300 properties in the village of Centerville.

The sewer expansion construction is being coordinated with the Vineyard Wind project, to minimize cost and construction-related disruption to residents and businesses, officials said.

Construction on the next project, the Route 28 East Sewer Expansion Project, is scheduled to start in September. The Route 28 East project will allow approximately 90 properties to connect to the municipal sewer system, and will install "critical" infrastructure that will serve as the "backbone" for the remainder of sewer expansion, officials noted.

The session will be recorded and posted on www.BarnstableWaterResources.com for later viewing.
