New Barnstable Pilot Swim Program to Start Soon

Barnstable families have more options now for child swim lessons.

In an effort to accommodate families with parents who work during the day, the Town of Barnstable is going to offer a new evening child swim class, for babies and children as young as 6 months.

“Our Aquatic staff feels very strongly that learning to swim and be comfortable around the water is vital for the safety of our community,” said Patti Machado, Assistant Director for the Recreation Division of Community Services, adding that “lessons have actually been declining in numbers, partly because of the YMCA providing the service year round (once the facility was built) and the other is because many of our families have two parents working.”

The lessons will begin at 5:30 and will be held at at Dowses Beach, from June 27 to August 8, with no lessons on July 4.

“Every year we sit with our staff and brain storm what we can do better and what needs to be done to service the community better in every program,” explained Machado.

Visit the Town’s website for the schedule and fees, but hurry, because space is very limited and is on a first come-first served basis.
