New History Trivia Contest Will Countdown to the Lighting of the Pilgrim Monument

The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum (PMPM) kicked off the countdown to the annual Lighting of the Monument on November 23 with a new history trivia contest aimed at raising awareness that the Pilgrims first landed in the New World in Provincetown. The contest, starting on Wednesday, November 2, will be featured on the PMPM social media platforms Twitter and Facebook and will post weekly trivia questions for the public to answer. Those who are the first to answer correctly will win a one-year membership to the PMPM.

The annual Lighting of the Monument commemorates the first landfall of the Pilgrims in Provincetown Harbor where they spent five weeks on board the Mayflower and signed the historic Mayflower Compact, the cornerstone of our current American democracy. The Pilgrims then set sail for Plymouth where they established the Plymouth Colony.

“We are going to test your knowledge of Pilgrim history,” said Christopher J. Snow, president of the PMPM board of trustees. “The trivia contest is a fun way to engage others in the interesting facts surrounding the voyage of the brave Mayflower Pilgrims whose first stop in Provincetown is not as well-known as we’d like it to be.”

The Pilgrim Trivia Contest will feature a new question every Wednesday, for four weeks leading up to the Lighting of the Monument on November 23. The contest will select a new winner every week. Each winner will receive a one-year “Neighborhood Membership” valued at $50 which allows the member to bring a guest each time they visit the PMPM and 10% off in the Gift Shop. The trivia questions will be posted on PMPM Twitter page and winners will be direct-messaged through Twitter. The PMPM is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. every day, until November 30 and is closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 24.

The annual Lighting of the Monument is public event, free of charge sponsored by the PMPM that brings together all facets of the community including year-round residents, part-timers and visitors alike. It’s truly the kick-off to the holiday season for the Lower Cape and leads into the Thanksgiving weekend.
