Old Kings Highway Committee Approves Renewable Plan for CCCC

Cape Cod Community College got the go-ahead for solar panels and small vertical wind generator.

Barnstable Old Kings Highway Regional District Committee unanimously approved the 's plan to placeground-based panels on the property where the first-proposed wind turbine was to be built, in a total project that has the potential to save the College between $140K and $150K in energy costs each year. 

The College has been working with Turning Mill Energy, LLC of Sandwich, MA to create the system. The company has a variety of renewable energy installations throughout the region.  

In addition, panels will be placed on the roofs of the gym and Facilities Maintenance buildings, and a small vertical axis generator will be mounted to the side of the gym, rising about 20ft. above the roof line.

These elements, with a new solar panel roofed carport structure to be tested in parking lot 12, are projected to generate approximately 640-650kw of electricity, a very similar amount to what would've been generated by the first-proposed turbine.

If the carport is shown to be financially successful, others may be erected at a later time throughout the campus lots, depending upon the availability of funding.

Plans are being developed, but Turning Mill hopes to do basic infrastructure work over the College's holiday break and in January before the start of the new Spring semester. 

Installation would then continue with the system fully functional this summer. However, significant work remains to be finalized so the exact timetable is still not developed. 

The basic plan is show here. The "arrow-tip" like diagram to the far left of the drawing is a 50 foot "green buffer" of undisturbed trees and vegetation. The solar array itself will be placed another 50 to 150 feet from the buffer, well out of visual range of Rte. 6A or Rte. 132.
