PMC to Pass Through Barnstable, Local Cyclists to Ride in Annual Event

The PMC will ride through Barnstable on Sunday, Aug. 4 during two early-morning periods; four local residents will also be taking part in the ride.

Four Barnstable residents are registered to ride in this year's Pan-Massachusetts Challenge (PMC), which takes place this weekend, according to ride organizers.

Close to 5,500 cyclists will ride on Aug. 3 and 4, with a collective goal of raising $38 million to benefit adult and pediatric patient care and research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund.

Cyclists choose from 11 routes of various milage. The ride runs through 46 towns across the state; six, two-day routes range from 153-190 miles, while five one-day rides range from 25-110 miles. To see the various routes, visit the PMC website.

Where Can You Watch the PMC In Barnstable?

Residents should note that the PMC will pass through Barnstable on Sunday, Aug. 4.

Between 5:45 and 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, riders will pass through Service Road in Barnstable through to Meetinghouse Way onto Church Street, down to Parker Road through to Main Street and continue toward County Complex through to the Barnstable water stop, which is located at the Barnstable Courthouse on Main Street.

Between 6:10 and 8:10 a.m., riders will pass through Main Street in Barnstable, as well.

The PMC ride raised $37 million in 2012, which accounted for more than 50 percent of the Jimmy Fund's annual revenue.

"It's a powerful and emotional weekend for everyone involved," Billy Starr, PMC founder and executive director, said in a statement. "From the cyclists to volunteers, staff and family and friends along the route, the PMC unifies 10,000 people for one weekend to make a difference and raise funds to eradicate cancer."
