Privateers Man-Handle Home Town Bluefins

Bluefins lose a tough matchup to the 1,000 Islands Privateers 6-3 in front of a very supportive home crowd.

The young Cape Cod Bluefins came into their last home game of 2011 having lost five straight games and facing a very strong 1000 Islands team which boasts the second best record in the FHL. But their unlucky losing streak did not end there as they fell to the powerful Privateers.

The Fins got on the board first when Forward AJ Tesoriero slammed home a David Lun rebound with just 6:25 gone in the first period.

However, just 1:52 seconds later the Privateers knotted the score at 1 when Michael Byrd was sent in alone on a breakaway, beating brand new Bluefins goalie, Mike Ronan with a slick move to his forehand.  The visiting team outshot the Fins 17-10 in the first period.

At the 2:12 mark of the second period, the Bluefins went up 2-1 when rookie (and youngest player) Matt Harrington fired a rocket from the left hash mark that beat Privateer goalie Matt Kinsella high over his right shoulder. From that point on, the rest of the second period was mostly all 1000 Islands.

Other than a few decent scoring chances and an unassisted Garret Peters goal with just under 5 minutes left, the Privateers controlled play in the second and came away with a 4-3 lead and a 35-24 shot advantage.

The third period totally belonged to the visiting team as the hometown Fins, despite several quality scoring chances, just couldn’t find the back of the net.

Just 2 minutes into the final frame Michael Richard put the Privateers up 5-3 and they never looked back. Paul Kelley sealed the Bluefins’ fate with an empty net goal, which also completed a 3 goal hat trick for the veteran forward.

Final shots on goal were 47-40 in favor of the Privateers.

The Bluefins next home game is on Tuesday Jan. 3 at Hyannis Youth & Community Center. The cape Cod community is strongly encouraged to come out and support the boys!
